Sketchbook Project - Limited Edition

This year, instead of doing the traditional Sketchbook Project, I joined Art House Co-op in their Limited Edition Sketchbook Project. What is the difference you ask?

"The Limited Edition Book Series

Every contributor to the Sketchbook Project Limited Edition Vol. 1 will be included in a series of art books documenting the project. Together, the series will provide insight into the imagination and process of each artist participating in the project. Bound by the Brooklyn Art Library Press and hand-finished in our Brooklyn workshop, the book series will be published in the fall of 2012."

It is very exciting to know that your work will be in a published book!

As usual, I waited a long time before starting which put added pressure on me to produce something that was not only wonderful but also came to fruition in a short period of time. Finding inspiration for an entire book does not come easily to me. I am always so envious of those who can sit down to  blank pieces of paper and produce page after page of amazing drawings.

Now I do draw and paint but not on demand like some can. Instead I turned to paper crafting which is another great love of mine.  I am not lying when I say I have literally thousands of printed papers....it's an obsession really. I decided to use the papers as inspiration to create scenes. Each scene is a manifestation of a dream or desire....a story; "what you want to be when you grow up" or "what you want to be when you retire" or maybe it's a secret wish or fantasy or maybe you are already living that dream. The book contains no words or suggestions only places for your mind to rest and wander and make up your own story.

In the end, I am happy with the results. I love that the characters are just that...distinct, relatable characters and that the book is a journey just like life.

The Things Found Series: The Fridge

Art House Co-op is hosting a series called The Things Found. Here is the info for this week....

Volume One: The Fridge
The Things Found Series is the beginning of a new photography series that encourages participants to capture an image of a common space. This week, we’re challenging artists to shed a little light on one of the most personal spaces of all… the refrigerator. Open your fridge and take a photo of the inside in all its glory. Don’t worry if it isn’t beautiful! We’ll create an exhibition from the photographs we receive that reveals the substance of our community — one everyday space at a time.

Here is my entry.

I opted for black and white so that the typography becomes the focus. It's funny looking at this photo you would think we were obsessed with dairy products!

Happy Leap Year!

The Meal

"Nothing makes us feel connected quite like sharing a meal together. On February 24th at 12pm Eastern Standard Time, thousands of strangers from around the world will sit down for a bite in unison and capture a shared experience at the exact same time. Take a photograph of yourself with your meal and mail it back to us. These simultaneous snapshots – self-portraits of people and their foods – will be exhibited in our storefront project space and made available online. Our aim is to inspire a feeling of community across geographic and cultural boundaries. So wherever you may be on February 24th at 12pm, keep your camera handy and something delicious nearby – and remember that thousands of strangers, both near and far, are sharing that meal with you." - Art House Co-op

This project is intended to being awareness to world hunger. It is too late to participate in the exhibit but it's is never too late to participate in the solution! If you want to make a difference visit Action Against Hunger to find out what you can do.

I don't do self portraits very well so I only took a photo of my meal. I thought what would be more interesting is a photo of an empty plate so I took one of those too.
